Neil Leopold says:

But over the course of an hour or more,
my colleagues -- be we in an orchestral or chamber setting -- cannot keep their intonation from climbing, and I'm left "sagging" at 440 with my short barrel while they head to 442 and beyond. Is this need for shorter barrels common with Pynes, or did I get an oddball? I realize that my colleagues' pitch problems don't help matters, but the mouthpiece itself is still a little flat using 65mm.

Walter says:

I too deplore the game of continually rising sharpness which so many players today - even conservatory trained - seem to indulge in.

I walked out of a rehearsal last fall, where the trumpets were playing 50 cents above A - 440 (yes, a full quarter step!!!!) and the conductor failed to restrain them.

It was an interesting experience, BTW. The pitch was so far off that my ear was sometimes "tricked" into hearing a "modulation". It was simply NOT the same pitch other people were playing.

Yes, my Pyne (please remember this was 25 years ago) was also pitched too low. I have no experience with current Pyne mouthpieces, so I am passing NO JUDGEMENT.

Walter
