In what state does your friend live/work? Many states have regulations
requiring the issuance of individual (sometimes called "basic" or
"standard") HMO/POS/PPO policies by local insurance companies. The rates may
be high, unfortunately, and state regulations may also allow exclusion of
pre-existing medical conditions, or substantial rate adjustments for those
conditions. Most states maintain a list of which insurers are licensed to do
business in that state. Some states post that information on their
Department of Insurance website. You can get to those sites by going through
an index on my site, at www.optimetra.com/state.htm.

Another option is for your friend to purchase a indemnity policy, also
called major medical or catastrophic medical. These policies usually have
some deductible that must be satisified before they kick in, say $1000 or
$5000 in yearly expenses. However, by covering only serious medical
conditions, they can be much less expensive than a typical HMO policy that
covers regular visits.

Usually there are insurance brokers who specialize in health insurance, and
they will be listed in the Yellow pages. Insurance agents who deal in auto,
home, etc. also often are licensed to sell indemnity policies.

Finally, if your friend belongs to the musician's union, there may be
options to purchase medical insurance through the union. I can't tell you
what those options might be, but the union will be able to.

Hope this helps...

Subject: [kl] Insurance

May be off the "direct" clarinet topic...

...but I have a friend who is a free-lance professional musician and teacher
of private lessons who, for personal reasons, suddenly needs to find health
insurance. Do any of the professional free-lancers out there have a good
source for insurance? Spouses with a "real" job (while probably the way to
go) is not an option in this particular case answer!! ;-)

Thanks!
