You are pretty much at the mercy of your repairman, unless you learn to do
things yourself. Most minor repairs and tweaking on my own horns I do
myself, but sometimes I have the tech at the store where I work help
me. To properly repair instruments is an art, but for most purposes,
finger-painting-level skills will do. There are several books available on
basic instrument repair designed for band directors. They will cover most
of what you need, without getting bogged down in tone-hole reaming and
crack pinning.
