I like mine...

I swab the instrument out first with a handkerchief swab, then put the pad
savers in to store. Perhaps it keeps the moisture at an equilibrium, like
leaving orange peels or a dampit in your case. I don't think it impacts the
pads much, especially since I have the upper joint mostly in cork.
Anyhow, I went 10 years on my last set of pads (playing almost every day). And
I had them changed because I felt like it, not really because there was a
problem with them.
