Sorry for my ignorance. l have never heard of the Kinder Clarinet, could
someone explain?

"Kinder" means "child" in German. There are two clarinets (that I
know of) that are merchandised as "children's" instruments because they
have fewer keys and therefore are suited for smaller hands and for
beginners, and also they are plastic and shorter in length than a full
Bb clarinet --- again, handy features for a child who is just starting
out. Part of their selling point is that a child doesn't need to
re-learn the fingerings that he/she already knows when/if he child
graduates to a full clarinet.

One of these instruments is tuned to Eb and has the brand name
"Kinder Clarinet". The other is tuned to C and has the brand name
"Lyons C Clarinet".

You'll find discussion about both of these instruments in the
Klarinet Archives. People generally agree that, while these
instruments are not 'professional' level, they're a far sight better
than some of the really cheap full-size instruments.

When my daughter asked to play clarinet, I rented a full-size Bb
for her, and she dropped out eventually. The results might have been
different if I had started her on a Lyons C. Who knows? I wish I had
known about them when she displayed interest in an instrument.
But all's not lost. She's serious about chorus. She tried out
for a solo at school a couple of weeks ago.

Cheers,
Bill
