Subj: [kl] The problem with the bridge linking upper and lower joint
Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 13:05:29 -0400

Some weeks ago I asked how to fix my problem with the bridge linking
the keys of the upper and the lower joint (one piece was to long). I
had NOT filed it, I brought it to a repairsman. Filing was not
considered by him. He claimed that the piece was bent (by me)
somewhere (don't believe it).

Ok, now THIS problem is fixed (paying about 25 Dollars). But now some
plate is not closing dense (I mean, the plate/pad is not closing the
tone hole perefectly), which now also has to be fixed. I noticed, that
the axis on the lower joint with the 3 rings and the plate above these
3 rings is bent (the upper part of this axis, parallel to the plate,
is bent a little bit). I suspect that the repairsman bent this axis,
in order to fix the other problem. I have no good feeling concerning
bending the axis. I have the feeling that such an axis "should" be
straight. My question: Am I wrong? Is bending the axis "allowed" in
such a situation?

By the way: It bothers me that after the repair there was a visible
scratch on the silver of the bridge which was repaired. Also that the
plates are not completely dense. Absence of density is a problem one
often can not realize immediately. So, now I have to bring the
instrument again to the repairsman, and hope that then the problem
will be fixed. But maybe it will be only better, but not completely
fixed, which a will noticed perhaps only later. And again and again...

What I would like to express: I hate the need of a repair of the
clarinet. It gives the feeling of being completely depended on the
repairsman. In particular if you got scratches and non-dense pads
after the repair and have to go there 3 or 4 times until the problem
is really fixed.

What about other list members? Do you have similar experiences with
repairsmen? Or are you always satisfied with them?

Dirk
