I've always thought that it is much more satisfying to play for living,
breathing humans than for the four walls of a practice or band room. Those
walls can't appreciate or take delight in the gift you're bestowing upon
them! (Neither can the loo.) I always grab someone from the hallway to come
in and listen to me play when I'm working something up for a performance.
These instances have more often than not yielded some great suggestions and
were most helpful. Don't we have to practice performing, so that it becomes
second nature? Forgive me if I'm going off onto something else here, but I
have always thought that this was an important aspect of being a complete
musician. Are things like this being forgotten in the school systems?
Performing was always mandatory for us...
