In my modest opinion, people who use the internet seriously
for work, pleasure, or just communicating should run screaming
from AOL. There are many other excellent services that are
the same price or cheaper, and have truely excellent user
ratings.

Why the vitriol? I put up about 3 new websites a year for
various purposes, until recently only non-profit stuff. I
track complaints because that is the best way to see if all
your "brilliant" ideas, hard work, and self-testing works.
For 5 years, I have noticed that between 80% to 90% of the
complaints come from AOL folks. The overwhelming majority
of the complaints trace directly to AOL's peculiar notion of
the internet, where they ignore whole sections of standards.
the MIME issue is only the tip of the iceberg. I, in addition
to many other sites, such as the White House, have been forced
to put up special hand-holding pages attempting to help the
people AOL does this to. I find that I have to update this with
each point release as AOL finds even more unique ways of handling
the internet. I do NOT have this problem with anyone else, other
than WebTV, which is a very special type of technology.

did you hit a sore point...yep!

They never fixed it. There is no way to send plain text in AOL 6.0. Your
person who is having trouble should dump 6.0 and use 5.0. AOL 5.0 is good, a

big improvement over earlier AOL. There are no big advantages to 6.0,
nothing
that comes close to making it worthwhile to lose ability to send ASCII text.

AOL keeps putting messages on the Welcome screen, "Why haven't you upgraded
to 6.0?" I didn't because IMHO it is a *downgrade*!
