Hmmmmmm.........I wonder if perhaps we could include playing the instrument
in a rehearsal as a component of "performing"............

I have always thought of performing in several ways - and at some levels -
just playing with others - either getting together and playing for fun, or
rehearsing - is all part of a performance experience.

I'm not sure performing has to be in a formal setting - although I agree
that talking to oneself and singing in the shower are probably not
performance venues......
