I was self-taught for the first two years. After that, I received three
years of lessons in college. I did not pick up saxophone until long after
that, but found that the adjustments to be made for sax were minimal. I
presume I was just a natural, since I don't recall any significant
embouchure changes made when I began formal study.

A close facing with a hard reed feels about the same to my embouchure as an
open facing with a softer reed. An open facing with a hard reed would be
the killer! The greater air resistance of the close facing will get to me,
though. It has caused me to largely abandon my O'Brien OB*/Mitchell Lurie
4 1/2 setup in favor of a Woodwind K10M/Vandoren 3. Now I don't feel like
an oboist! For jazz, I go even MORE open, with a Selmer C85 115 and
(currently) a Legere 3. But embouchure stamina does not vary significantly
from one to the other. It should not if the reed strength and facing are
well matched.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
