If you think that the 3rd clarinet part of Mahler 1 made you a nervous
wreck, you should have seen what it did to Mahler. He could have been a
winner of the Olympic twitching contest, and that does not include his
natural guilt, the terrible feelings he harbored about the deaths of
children, being part of Europe's most dysfunctional family, and being
married to Alma.
In fact, as I go over the litany of Mahler things that moved him from
the center of normality, I've come to the conclusion that you would need
years of lessons in how to become a nervous wreck of Mahlerian
proportions.
