Dear Blue Mondi. (that's a cool name). I do agree with Roger and some of
the other people that the band should have their own pride and
recognition for what they do, and that they should not want the "same"
letters as the atheletes. However, it makes me very angry that the jocks
rule the world, and that the school administrations encourage it. I'm
glad I went to Oberlin. I think we had the worst football team in Ohio,
and I loved it. They did not allow fraternities or sororities on campus,
except for scholastic or musical excellence. I didn't bother to apply
being that my gpa was rather low (1.9).
About 8 years ago, I heard a punk-rock tune on the radio that
created a fantasy about some student shooting the prom queen. I am very
embarrassed to admit, that when I heard the song I sort of chuckled.
Then we had Columbine last year here in Colorado, and I was devastated.
I don't think very much has been mentioned about schools bowing down to
the jocks and allowing their standards to "rule" the schools. I can't
really argue with Marty, the first chair clarinetist in his HS who was
also on the football team, and claims that the athletes do indeed work
harder. He must be right. He wouldn't lie to the list. I'm just glad
that I get to play a lot of great gigs with wonderful musicians and that
I don't know any big-shot athletes. I'm very happy being a couch potato
clarinetist. ANNIE
