My son is enrolling in St John's (Annapolis) in the fall. Every student there must
take a significant amount of music covering just the sort of things Roger mentions.
St John's considers music to be a necessary part of the core curricula, just like
math, physics, foreign languages (greek & french) etc. Interestingly, my son has
little interest in music and wants to be a (more advancced) computer geek when he
graduates. He believes that it is more important to get a well rounded general
education than to concentrate on tech classes. (Well, he will take some math and
computers over the summers.)

I assume that we will still (or again) be discussing this issue in four years. I
will get his opinion then.
