To talk to Mahler, I would have used a "large" rather than a "medium".

I ran into the Shostakovich Cello Concerto about a year after I resumed
playing and obviously found the ridiculously difficult passages were close
to impossible for me to play. I could probably hack them now, but don't
care to.

At that time, I did some "research" regarding Shosty's problems with Stalin
and the Commmy party line. I discovered that politics had nothing to do
with his problems with Stalin. It seems that in secret, Stalin played
clarinet and became so enraged at some of the Shostakovich clarinet parts
that he put Shosty on his "list". Finally, through his later symphonies he
redeemed himself. Whether or not Stalin could play these clarinet parts is
not known.

ROTFLMAO!!!! I'd like to have a similar discussion with Shostakovich for
writing some really awful technical passages...plus that one in the 1st
Cello Concerto. All that tongueing in the 1st movement was awful. Makes you
wonder if any of them has even *touched* a clarinet before.
