The difficulty is, that PIC [Phrasing in Contention] probably won't make
much sense to you as a beginning clarinet player, because it's very much
about the quite abstract considerations that performers bring to a
discipline in which they are already experienced.

....but (imo) a person *must* have an idea of where he or she is
headed before embarking on the journey. Deciding what music is, and
why it appeals, and how it works is such a fundamental item --- even if
someone's particular goal is not professional or performance oriented.
It seems to me that if you don't have a clear idea on these points, then
you end up being a really fast key pusher and nothing more.

Someone is going to post that surprises happen, and that a person
who maps everything out first may miss some of the biggest and best
surprises.
I won't argue against this because it's true.... sometimes. But I
do argue that it would be wrong for any of us to avoid discussions of
this sort because "I'm not there yet and I can't possibly understand
it."

Cheers,
Bill
