I see now. Sorry about that. I know how German conductors are; I worked with
one for almost two months a couple summers ago at an opera festival in which
I was playing 2nd clarinet in the orchestra. He was the orchestra's head
conductor, and in one particular instance at a dress rehearsal, he stopped
the players and said to the diva on stage (all the while with a thick
accent), "You look like a cheeseburger waiting for McDonald's!" Of course
his syntax was all off, but he got many strange looks from everybody in
earshot. There was also this time when a violin player was late for a sitz
rehearsal, and as she was coming in, he yelled at her, "Harley!! Get your
*ss in the chair!!" (Imagine Arnold Schwartzenegger saying these things and
then try to keep a straight face.)

Maybe this was the same reason for Mahler's demise?
