Yes! This is exactly the point! EXACTLY.

At the school board meeting that I've already described, one of
the 7th-8th grade bands in the district showed up and played outside the
meeting room door. They played something unusual (Schoenberg? I don't
know, I didn't recognize it, perhaps it was an arrangement of one of
Strauss's more strident excerpts, but it was not football marching band
music).

You should have SEEN how eyebrows shot up !! "What kind of music
is that? Do cheerleaders dance to music like that?"

What I should have said (in a very loud voice) if I had been on my
toes, would have been:

"It sounds as if the band leader is actually a teacher, and he has
taught them something."

I'm sure it was no accident that the band leader chose a 'non-marching
band' piece of music for this particular serenade.
