In the Navy, we too had those. Yes, they were invulnerable to just about
anything. But, to be honest, I just never could stand how awful they
sounded when most people played them. Perhaps that is because we were
playing trying to get in tune with a wall of saxophones and trumpets with
only two clarinets per ceremonial band? Instrumentation - I kid you not -
four trumpets, two altos saxes, one or two tenors two clarinets (three if we
were lucky) one piccolo...
four trombones, one tuba...I could have left something out. Memories.
