A couple of times a year I use Google to search on the keyword "Oliver
Seely" just to keep myself abreast of what's out there with my name on it.
If I found something professionally embarrassing or libelous I'd have to
decide what the next step ought to be. Thankfully, that has never
happened. 99% of all the stuff I find was created by me. Part of my good
fortune in this matter is doubtless due to my rule never to post anything
for which I can't offer a reasoned defense AND which I wouldn't mind seeing
put on page A1 of the morning newspaper.

My last search turned up some silly little paragraphs on something to the
effect of "Why I support an international data netork" (
http://www.cni.org/docs/farnet/geoindex.html ) which date back to around
1990 or maybe earlier. There was a contest with one winner to be picked
from each state in the U.S. (I was not a winner). I notice in the first
entry that I used the name of a friend in Paris and where she works. I
would NEVER do that today. I figure that one of these days she'll see the
piece and complain to me, so I have to be ready for that.

Another and somewhat adolescent one which has been circulating on the Web
for years is in the Sarajevo Pipeline at
http://mediafilter.org/SJ/SJmsgAR001.html . I still get a chuckle when I
reread it. Dumping on all the poor, xenophobic grandparents in the
Balkans! I ought to be ashamed of myself! 8-)

Doing this kind of search is good for another reason. Some of this stuff
just doesn't go away -- a fair warning to all of us that our expressions of
irresponsibility can come back to haunt us years after we have forgotten
about them.

Oliver
