Messages sent privately stay private - a search engine has to see the
message in order to index it, and that means that an intervening machine (a
mail relay) would have to make a public copy of it so the search engine
could deliver up a URL to it.

However, just like any public, non-encrypted mail system, private messages
can be hijacked, read, and passed on to their ultimate destination without
your knowledge. That can (does) happen with the postal mails, too.
