Which then leads to the next question..........

Why?

Why does a band director do so many extra-curricular things with the
band? How does this teach musical literacy? In fact, is musical literacy
involved in the most fundamental way in the existing band program?

If in fact, the school requires the band to be at home football and
basketball games, and it is part of the letter grade received - then no
"Letter Jacket" is necessary - the students earn their "letter" in the grade.

If pep band and marching band are purely voluntary - then some kind of
recognition is a good thing I guess - although sometimes those folks play
just because they enjoy being part of the "show."

Best wishes,
