I understand that the kids may view this as a slight. IMHO, however,
the best course of action would be to not award "letters" for
participation in band and choir at all. Doing so gives the message that
music is an extracurricular activity, as opposed to an academic subject
that *ought* to be a core part of the curriculum.

As to the "less important" part, you can point out to the kids that it's
very possible to earn "letters" in music. Letters like "BA" "MA" and
"DMA"; even PhD. I've yet to meet anyone who has been awarded a
doctorate in wrestling or football.
