I witnessed the CSO play Mahler 5 last year -- both Larry Combs and Greg
Smith played on Oehler-system clarinets. Bud Herseth & the other
trumpet players did not, however, use rotary trumpets, which players in
many orchestras use for "German" works. Given how they sounded, though,
I don't care if they hooted on garden hoses; it worked fabulously all
around.=20

Greg Smith occasionally monitors the list - perhaps he remembers what he
used in the mentioned recordings, which are also amongst my favorites.
(You should also listen to the earlier *live* recording made by the CSO
w/ Solti conducting, also outstanding. I admit it, I'm a junkie - I own
both).

When Larry Combs plays Boehm clarinets, they are the Leblancs he
endorses, perhaps tweaked up a bit. I don't recall ever seeing an
advertisement stating that it's the only brand he ever uses.
