Lori,

I vividly remember Mahler 1, athough I just played principal cuckoo
Tricky finding volunteers with 4 or 5 clarinets, but the timing worked
and we had a killer clarinet section.

My pencilled note on score says: req. 4 clarineters: 1&2 sops, 3rd
sop & bass !!&Eb , 4 Eb.

Movement 4 uses:1,2,3 in C, 4 in Eb.
Eb part in score has annotation (mindestens doppelt besetzt)
Mvt 2 : 1,2,3 in A.
mvt.3: 1,2 in Bb&C, 4 in Eb, 3rd bass&Eb
Mvt1: 1,2,3bass,4Eb.

The bass clarinet part, as written, calls for in addition Bb, A, C and
Eb.
The 2 Eb beirgarten music is I think intended to sound a bit drunken
since the lead (as Leeson noted) written for the bass clar doubler(also
note the string gliss). And in the same sections, 1&2 are in C.
(Alas, none of us had C clars, so we got to transpose that & the final
movement.)

In rehearsal, before the bass guy was there, we covered the 3rd movement
parts with real Eb player playing lead and I transposed the 2nd Eb part
on Bb, so it is possible for the 1st player to cover that if comfortable
with Eb.

hth
