I played this piece a couple of years ago with my community orchestra. The
clarinet 3 part calls for bass clarinet and has a small E-flat part (only a
couple of lines in the third movement, basically doubling the other E-flat
part). The clarinet 4 part has the more prominent of the E-flat parts.

I saw the Philadelphia Orchestra do Mahler 1 a few weeks ago, and noticed the
E-flat part wasn't doubled. Is the doubling considered optional?
