Yes, practice from the score!

I prefer to start work on any piece from the score and encourage my
students to do the same. Sometimes this is difficult if the score has
the (Bb or A) clarinet part in C, but that situation is rare.

I do this whenever possible but especially for clarinet & piano
works--because in buying the clarinet part, I have the piano score.

Study/practice is more interesting and rehearsals are more productive,
because I have an idea of the piece as a whole. For example: While my
part is a whole note, I can see if "accomp" is quarters, eighths,
sixteenths and where the harmony changes.

This is in the long run, *also* a time saver.

One of the best benefits of being music librarian is that i have easy
access to scores for orchestra works. I used to have to plan ahead and
use interlibrary loan.
