That's very true, and it IS getting harder and harder to distinguish between
acoustic and electronic. I have worked with ProTools this semester, and boy
howdy can it do some amazing things. I'm still positive that the music on
the show is sequenced. It just doesn't quite convince me as real. We even
discussed the composer-Mark(?) Snow is his name I think-in my composition
class when we were learning the sequencing programs and the teacher was
talking about how he sequences his music for the show.

Even in live performances, though, some pop groups go half and half. They'll
have parts multi-channeled (whether an electronic or a recorded sample) with
ProTools and running off of MIDI (along with the lights and other timed
stuff) while there are live performers at the same time. I think Aerosmith
did this on SNL a few months ago..

While it's entirely possibly, how are you sure?

Also, Cakewalk is awfully unsophisticated compared to any number of
dedicated sequencers you can find by walking into your local Guitar Center,
never mind the kind of stuff that Mannheim Steamroller or other groups that
make their living via sequenced (and live combinations, in the case of
Mannheim) music.

In case you're wondering, I spent a day with Chip Davis and was blown away
by the underlying sophistication of the equipment and the integration with
live music. It gets very hard to tell what's synthesized, what's live, and
what's "in between".
