And yet, when you think about what the word literally means,
it brings unpleasant images to mind. Like many other expres-
sions, this one has been used so often as to have its less
savory connotations diluted. Perversely, I have to admit
that there's something "cute" about it when spoken by some-
body from Britain. Of course, this has nothing to do with
the clarinet or music.
