Subj: [kl] more on Arabesques by Paul JeanJean
Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 08:27:38 -0400

Dear Knowlegeable Ones,
Thanks for the info I've received so far on Arabesques by
Paul JeanJean. We do already have the music, but what we
need is information on the composer, and any available
background on the piece itself. This is the infor we've
received so far:

A CD liner (Dragon's Tongue, Robert Spring) describes
JeanJean as having been a soloist with "the professional
band of the French Guard Republicaine" as well as with
the Monte Carlo orchestra. I have no idea whether this
band had special prestige or not.

The CD liner also says that JeanJean was "the composer of
ineluctable etudes for cringing clarinetists" (if you
need your dictionary for this one.... you aren't alone, I
did as well!) and also variations on Carnival of Venice.
---
The garde républicaine is composed by professional
musicians and is part of the french army. One of its task
is to execute some concert during official events. It
definitely has prestige.

I will try to look for more informations about
Paul Jean-Jean.
---
I have a copy of the Arabesques which is Copyright 1926
by Andrieu Fretes, Paris, France. Published by Special
Permission by Alfred Music Co., Inc. Port Washington,
L.I., New York.

Thanks again for your help!

Listers,
My 9th grade All-state niece is learning this piece, but
we don't know where to find info on the piece or the
composer.

I presume my French translation is close--Arabesque:
Fantasy for Bb Clarinet with Piano Accompaniment, but I
don't know anything else about the composer or the
piece. I think recent editions may have been published
by Alfred, Billaudot or Andrieu Freres . Can you give me
composer info and or info on the piece? Thanks for your
HELP!!!

Composer: Paul JeanJean (1874-1928)
Title: Arabesques
Under the title it says: Fantaisie pour Clarinette Si
(flat sign) avec accompagnement de Piano

Under the composer: ex-Clarinette Solo a la Musique de
la Garde Republicaine
Premier prix du Conservatoire de Paris
Clarinette Solo des Concerts Clasiques de Monte-Carlo

It has no date on the piece anywhere. Thanks again for
the help.
