We are currently arguing the withdrawing of arts electives in my county here
in Maryland. Our Board of Education has cut all fine arts, tech. ed. and
foreign language electives from the sixth grade curriculum in order to
insert an extra hour of reading. Our state code requires that these
electives be offered for selection by all middle school students. I just
testified two nights ago at a county council budget hearing concerning this
removal of curriculum content to a packed house (in favor of keeping the
electives). I just want to know where folks think they are going to find
their leisure entertainment, their stylish clothing, computer games,
interpreters, etc. when we no longer have students studying foreign
languages, music and art. I really wonder what solid matter is between
these folks' ears.
