There are a (small) number of elementary (grade) schools in British Columbia
which require all students at a Grade 6 or 7 level to take band as their music
component. Music is mandated at the elementary level for all children.
Personally, as a band instructor, I disagree with this requirement, and am glad
I teach children who are excited about learning an instrument. The initial
squeaks and shreiks one gets from enthusiastic beginners (who I know will
improve) is enough for me, without those of the kids who are forced to be there.
