The other day I was looking at a jazz calendar I have, where birthdays are
listed on every day of the year for noted jazz players. I was fascinated to
note that this month on three Wednesdays we have birthdays for Woody Herman
(the 16th), Artie Shaw (the 23rd) and Benny Goodman (the 30th). As I looked
over the rest of the month I saw May also has Sidney Bechet on the 14th and
Jimmy Hamilton on the 25th. Pretty good company.
