William Stubbins, "Essentials of Technical Dexterity for the Clarinet"
(Piasano Press......did I spell that correctly?) makes great use of a
series of Flexibility Studies that deals specifically with tongue placement
- although he never really mentions tongue placement.

Overblowing the harmonics/overtones on the clarinet (eg. Middle C/Clarion
G/Altissimo E/Altissimo A.....) on a single fingering helps identify
position of the aural cavity for generating the correct general pitch. The
fingerings and register key bring the notes in tune.

There are ways to teach "correct" voicing/tongue position without having to
actually deal with the tongue.
