Deep down in my guts, I agree with you that materials make a
difference; but many acoustical experts say that shape (which *does*
include smoothness of interior surfaces, or lack thereof, and therefore
may be related to the wood's polishability) is what makes the
difference, not the material itself.

That's what they say, at least. I've ever been able to convince
myself that it's true.
