However, large retailers such as Brook-Mays heavily discount the Festivals,
too - to within $100 or so of R13s. You can mail order from Brook-Mays, too.
(the designation is F13 -

David Naden noted:

<<<What I discovered during this process is that the Buffet Festival
model compares very well with the Prestige RC model even though there is
a difference in the bore design of each model. It became clear in my
mind that the increased cost for a set of RC Prestige was largely due to
marketing. If marketing costs were the main reason that Prestige RC
instruments cost more, I simply could not justify spending extra money
for RC Prestige instruments when overall quality of Festival model
instruments were comparable.>>>

It's probably less marketing than Boosey & Hawkes' management of their
distribution system. While the list price of the Prestige is indeed
much higher than the Festival, most folks buy the Prestige from a
discount house like Woodwind & Brasswind or IMS (both fine
establishments, I might add), who will sell them for much less than list
price.

On the other hand, you cannot buy a Festival through a catalog -- only
your local music store, who can discount only a bit off list. Voila --
the "street price" of each of them ends up being pretty much the same.

Yamaha does the same with their "Allegro" models. It's really a way to
help the local music stores stay in business.
