I suspect you will hear from many people dissing the Selmers, but there is
nothing wrong with them. In fact, you have several decisions to make about
them. They can be ordered from the factory with several mouthpiece
options. Also, they come in several models: The 1400 has a large, .590
cylindrical bore with no undercutting, like the old Selmer Paris Balanced
Tone. The 1401 has a smaller, polycylindrical .577 bore with
undercutting. The newer CL 300 has a brushed external finish which looks
like wood and has an even smaller, undercut bore. They have all withstood
the durability test over time. Another inexpensive brand to consider is
the (Leblanc) Vito (again several different models, differing mostly in
external finish, mouthpiece options and cases, but most with a fairly large
.584 bore, except some brand-new smaller-bore models). One of our
customers has recently switched to them from the Yamaha YCL-20, which has
been causing him intonation problems. Buffets tend to be more
expensive. Avoid Artleys like the plague, regardless of HOW cheap you can
get them!

In general, stick to the established, well known brands and you should
probably not cause great harm. These recommendations are based on several
years of experience in the school services business.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
