My two cents worty--this is not my experience at all. If I have a really
good reed (i.e. a really good piece of cane) that has gone south, I flatten
the back again and recut it about 5mm shorter. Assuming the cane is not bent
inward toward the facing of the mouthpiece, the reeds usually come back
really well, and I can even do this a second time if it is wide enough. The
question of width often is dependent upon the season and the altitude where I
am going to play the reed. In fact, some of my best clarinet reeds have been
good old saxophone reeds (is this an oxymoron?) that I've recut to become
clarinet reeds! But the key is the cane--bad cane equals a bad reed, no
matter how well it is cut. Good cane actually forgives some anomalies in the
cut.
