Tony, I found what you said to make sense in respect to the fact that each
of us knows our own reeds best. If you have played on a reed for umpteen
days, you know that reed better than someone who has never seen it. That
was my understanding of your post.

I possess Mr. Opperman's book, and it is quite useful as a reference for
those who are learning the art of making and adjusting single reeds, as the
title suggests. (I do believe, unfortunately, that it is out of print).
However, someone who is a seasoned professional as yourself and many others
on the list here are quite another matter. I think sometimes some of the
folks here do forget that there ARE professional clarinetists on the list
who DO play for a living and dedicate their lives to making a living with
the loveliness of this instrument.

I do not wish to get into the argument of "What is a professional?" and
etcetera. However, there IS a certain level of expertise involved and you
and these other men and women exceeded it a long time ago. Those who simply
play a few hours a week for fun need to keep this in mind when reading this
list.
