I have a BW&WW catalog that still lists them. I used Lurie 5-1/2's for
several years, but it was a long time ago. The original demand came from
players who found Lurie's #5 strength too light on very close-faced
mouthpieces. I think the #5-1/2 was meant to give some room for adjustment -
hence a little stiffer out of the box than many players would want. Everyone
I knew (admittedly a fairly small local circle here in the Philadelphia
area) who was using them switched to V12s when Vandoren began producing
them.
