a precise meaning, except "really stiff."

I have a number of packets of Mitchell Lurie Reeds that are marked as
5-1/2. They were all bought at one retailer, over the past 10 years,
culminating with me buying most of their remaining stock when I discovered
them in a discount bin. Presumably there was not much demand for them. I
don't know when they were originally ordered by the store, but presume it
was some time ago. Obviously Mitchell Lurie Reeds did come in 5-1/2s at
some stage if they no longer do.---Gavin

Well, if you want something that is _*REALLY REALLY*_ stiff, you
can buy a few tools and some cane tube, and then the sky is the limit!
My catalog says that Lurie stops at 5, and Vandoren V12 is the only
reed that goes to "5+". Notice that Vandoren doesn't call this reed
"5-1/2". Presumably a number above 5 is off the scale and doesn't have
a precise meaning, except "really stiff."

<><> I like the Mitchell Luries because you can get thicker reeds

Vandoren V12 is physically (dimensionally) thicker than most reeds,
but V12 is also a slight bit softer than the normal Vandorens. I used
to play V12 until several boxes in a row didn't work for me. This may
have been a fluke, however.

Cheers,
Bill
