I once had an older wood student clarinet I inadvertently left on a
windowsill for a few hours in direct sunlight (it wasn't sunny when I left
it there, but then came afternoon). The sun caused a crack in the wood,
luckily only in the barrel. It could have been a flawed barrel, but I
certainly deserved to have it crack. It gets pretty hot around a closed
window in summertime.

I've also seen a small crack on the outside of my R13 where the register
tube is installed. This clarinet is about 5 years old. Is that metal tube
hammered in there under tension? If so, that might explain why that's opened
up. It doesn't seem to have opened up on the inside, and it doesn't seem to
leak.
