I know that I'm not equipped (education-wise) to discuss musical
symmetry in depth; but it seems to me that "leading tone", "resolution",
"chord _progression_", "climax", etc. are all asymmetric concepts, and
music couldn't survive without them.

This is different from discussing individual elements within a
piece of music, such as if one part parallels another or is a mirror
image of it during a passage. Example: if a photograph includes a
soccer ball, the ball itself may be symmetrical, but this is not the
same as the photograph being symmetrical. More likely than not, the
ball is coming from or travelling to somewhere, and the viewer's eye
looks to see where.

I am aware of musical palindromes and at least a few principles of
counterpoint, and I'm not disparaging them. I'm just speculating that
--- overall --- symmetry is not one of the highest or most effective
goals.

Cheers?
Bill
