I was very saddened yesterday to learn that clarinetist Henry Larsen died
Tuesday evening. He had taught clarinet at the Hartt College of Music for
many years and was clarinetist with the Hartford Symphony. He had also
performed with various chamber and contemporary music groups. Many of you
may know of him through his writings for the Clarinet magazine or through
his latest publication, a guide to the Rose Etudes. He had studied with
Pasquale Cardillo, Rosario Mazzeo, Arthur Christmann and Simeon Bellison.

Sometime during the 1970s he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This
forced him to taper off performing activities and finally retire from
playing. He then devoted his energy to teaching, writing articles,
developing pedagogical materials and composing. He continued to be active in
these areas, adapting his activities as his illness progressed. He was
always pursuing new areas within music, and always seemed to have another
project he was working on.

I was very fortunate to have studied with Larsen at Hartt from 1976-1981. He
was a tremendous influence on me, both as a person and in my teaching and
playing. At a point in my life when I had nearly no formal clarinet
training, he patiently guided me and enlightened me. He was truly a mentor
and friend. He is the main reason that I am a clarinetist and musician
today.
