Nothing has been mentioned about petroleum based bore oils vs. organic bore
oils. Larry Naylor of Denver believes that many organic bore oils actually
embrace water; they are hygroscopic. If an oil actually will allow water to
become part of its molecular structure, and if they actually mix, then we're
talking about a mixture that can be more stable on and within the grain of
the wood, moderating those times when the wood is subjected to a flood of
water and other times when all is allowed to become relatively dry.

I use his formula. It "seems" to absorb into the wood, especially those
places one would expect to be most dry. Such places are the sockets and
bore of a barrel, the end grain and beginning bore at the top of the upper
joint and the upper tone holes which collect take on most condensation and
saliva. Of course, all tone holes have end grain, but many who lightly swab
their bores with bore oil don't remove the keywork and these open, end grain
areas continue to breath, to dry out and not benefit from the light, topical
bore oiling process. On the other hand, commercial bore oils I've used just
sit on the wood and pretend to be an oil spill needing to be cleaned up by
hazardous waste clean-up team.
