Exactly, Carol. For example, many oils are nonpolar, whereas
water is polar. The surface tensions are completely different. The
viscosities are different. The molecular dimensions and tendency to
hydrogen bond are different. And so forth.
The oil immersion demonstration is interesting with regard to the
value of oiling a clarinet, but it says absolutely nothing about how
deep or fast water will or won't penetrate.
