I've noticed this when I allow my horn angle to change. It first happened to
me when I was performing Messager's Solo de Concours. It freaked me out
completely. A few months ago, I finally figured out why it happens (to me at
least). I found that when it happens, I'm usually biting too hard and have
allowed my horn angle to become obtuse (too far out). I noticed this
happening during my recital jury; I was biting too hard (I do this sometimes
when I'm nervous) and the air was starting to leak. I decided to relax my
bite, and correct my horn angle. Ever since, I've not had this be a problem.
That worked for me, but I don't know if that will help you or not. Good
luck, though, I know how completely frustrating this is. What gets me is
that when I tried to explain this to my teacher, he said that he didn't know
what to do because it has never happened to him. Hmph.

By the by, it seems to me that horn angle can affect the air flow. Is this a
correct observation? I'm sure someone here will know.

Subject: [kl] Air leaking out of my nose

I have a problem that is a little bit unusual. I have a solo that I have
performed twice over the last couple of months. I can play it all the way
through (it's 8 pages long) at least twice in a practice session without any

problem. However, when I go to perform it, I can only get through the first

2/3 of it before air leaks out of my nose, causing me to lose all air
pressure behind the mouthpiece. I have checked the archives, but nothing
really applies to my situation, as this isn't a regularly occurring thing.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why I can play just fine at home (as well
as
at long rehearsals) without a problem, but as soon as I go to perform, air
leaks out of my nose? This is a very disturbing problem because it has only

cropped up in the last two performances. I would really like to know how to

fix it because I have to perform this piece again in two weeks. I hope
someone can give me ideas.

Thanks!

Robyn
