With all due respect to Alvin, his test seems to measure oil absorption by
wood, not water absorption. It also does not address whether or not a 1mm
coat of oil keeps water from entering the wood. Just wishing for more info.

I've had 2 R13 upper joints crack - two different clarinets. One (new - 5
months) cracked while I playing in a very cold bandroom. I should have
simply not played. The pop was audible. The other (6 year old clarinet,
no previous cracks) happened just before a concert. I had warmed up in the
band room and was going up the back stairs to the stage when a brass player
opened the outside door to low 20's temp. Another audible crack. One of
these is semi-successfully pinned; it still spreads open some in dry
conditions. A few hours in the case with orange peels or dampits and it
closes up again. The other one had a new upper joint (warranty from
Buffet) but is not nearly the fine instrument the original was. I do NOT
have proof that temp or dryness has anything to do with the above
happenings. But, I do suspect.........
