You would circular breathe if you wanted to play an extended passage
that is totally slurred beyond your endurance with normal breathing, or
is legato and so fast that stopping for a breath would cause you to miss
an entire beat.

One example: you're playing a piece that was written for a non-wind
instrument, where breathing is not an issue, and the piece sounds messed
up if you cut a note short or miss it completely in order to grab a
breath.
