I still have my Selmer 9* that I bought back in 1967 before I went to
college. It cracked in two places in the fall of 1968. One was through the
top side key on the upper joint and the other place was on the opposite side
of that crack. I sent the instrument off to the Selmer factory and they
filled the cracks with glue and installed two flush bands since it was a
little past the time that they would have replaced the top joint. The
instrument still plays quite well. The Selmer factory did not say anything
about not oiling the instrument enough or exposure to drastic temperature
changes. My clarinet teacher in college did make each of us purchase metal
clarinets and he taught us how to instal pads and springs. Then he made us
play those metal monsters on the marching field. He assured our college band
director (who was a very fine clarinetist as well as a tyrant on the podium)
that we would play the metal clarinets in tune with good sounds. We cursed
our clarinet teacher, Richard Pickar, countless times, but it sure made
playing in tune on our good instruments easier.
