<<<On page 50 of the Fall 2000 issue of the CBDNA Journal is a picture
owned by William Revelli. It was taken on Dec. 22, 1941 at the first
meeting of the CBDNA and there are 35 men who were, at that time, the
leading band directors in America. Unfortunately only about 15 of them
have been identified thus far.>>>

<<<[.....] Harold Bachman of Univ. of Chicago, Joe Gremelspacher of
Evansville College, [.....]>>>

Naturally, that's very interesting to me. In the late 1930's, Harold
Bachman had taught in the public schools here in Evansville, Indiana, and as
is well known, he eventually achieved great acclaim as the director of bands
at the University of Alabama. At the same time Bachman was here, another
teacher in the public schools here was Paul Yoder, famous as a
composer/arranger for bands, and later director of bands at the University
of Miami in Florida. While they were here, they were two-thirds of the
authorship team of a much-used band method of the '40's and 50's called the
"SYB" method, for Smith, Yoder and Bachman. (The Smith was Claude Smith,
long-time supervisor of instrumental music in the public schools here.)

I haven't heard the name of Joe Gremelspacher in many, many years, but I
believe I am correct that he left here and went about a hundred miles to the
north, to Indiana State University at Terre Haute, where he taught for a
very long time, perhaps into the 1960's.

That message really brought back memories from a half-century ago!
